Despite additional challenges faced due to COVID-19, the team worked diligently in innovating their 2021 flagship 'Vulcan'. Vulcan had enabled the team to brag 1st position in whole of Asia as well as in the technical design report that was submitted. Vulcan is a single electric motor propelled aircraft. Using a combination of hard work and unique design; the flagship was made to meet the mission statement of 2021 that required the team to build a system that can deliver colonists, habitats, and supplies on the surface of Mars.
Team’s 2020 Aircraft, “Airavat” is a single electric motor propelled, high wing aircraft with a tricycle landing gear, capable of lifting 38 pounds at a cruise velocity of 43 ft/s. The aircraft is also capable of releasing two autonomously guided colonist delivery aircraft along with multiple supply payloads.
This was the most successful season the Team ever had. 2019’s Flagship Redbird proved out to be one of the finest plane ever manufactured. Despite drastic rulebook changes with the completely new mission statement team was successful in achieving 4th Overall ranking in advanced class category.
Zephyrus is indeed the majestic advanced class aircraft which definitely lives up to its name - The Greek god of winds. It is a single-engine aircraft that can lift a total of 36 pounds and drop two payloads from an altitude of 175 ft, at a cruising velocity of 43 ft/s. This very aircraft helped us secure worldwide 6th position, back then the best position in the Asia/Pacific region at the SAE Aero Design East Competition.
Jetaayu has a wingspan of 3.2m and weighs 16 pounds. It has the capability of carrying 5 pounds of static payload and 2 pounds of dynamic payload. With the help of efficient DAS (Data Acquisition System) and the installation of necessary sensors, the aircraft can be modified for weather analysis and thermal imaging. In the 2017 SAE EAST aero design competition Jetaayu secured an overall world ranking of 7. It also helped the team secure an overall 3rd ranking in the Indian Space Conclave 2017 competition held by SEDS VIT.
Indian Space Conclave was organised by SEDS VIT on 5th and 6th August, 2017. All the Aero Design teams of VIT University, Creation Labs, ASME and some professional organisations displayed their respective models and works. The team displayed their advance class aircraft ‘Jetaayu’. The aircraft remained the centre of attraction of the event and received huge crowd to witness its beauty. Faculties from different schools and other universities visited our stall and interacted with us.
ATMOS is an event organised by BITS Pilani every year during their Tech Expo. Teams and individuals from universities like NITs, DTU, IITs, IISc, SRM and BITS participated and displayed their models and ideas. Jetaayu, the advance class aircraft of the team, witnessed overwhelming response from other teams and visitors. Officials from companies like Mytrah energy appraised the model. Other distinguished visitors included official from IITs, DRDO and ISRO.
